The Card was issued to him last Monday Monday, 3rd November 2014 at his Hilltop estate in Abeokuta, Ogun State by the Director General/CEO, Barrister Chris Onyemenam and other NIMC management staff.

The former President who could barely hide his excitement after activating his card, commended NIMC, noting that the card was indeed complex. He expressed optimism that it would help ease the process of intelligence gathering and enhance security in the country.

“Today I am happy that we have this multipurpose and well advanced card. When we first raised the subject to create something like this in 1979, there were objections, but today we have this sophisticated card. Maybe we are getting there,” he said.

He tasked the Commission to ensure that the card also gets to every Nigerian especially those residing in the hinterlands and creek areas.

Responding, the DG/CEO noted that indeed, the Commission is working fervently, to ensure that every eligible applicant is enrolled and issued his National e-ID card, no matter where they may reside.

He said NIMC has put in place several measures including the creation and deployment of enrolment systems to about 400 enrolment Centres nationwide. “This is to ensure that Nigerians residing in the hinterlands and grassroots areas are also captured into the database.”

Barrister Onyemenam added that the training of card activation officers and the deployment of card activation systems to all the state offices are in its final stages and will soon be fast-tracked to the Local Government offices for the issuance of the card.
