President Muhammadu Buhari was on Wednesday 14th October, 2015 presented with his National e-ID Card by the Director General and members of the top management of NIMC. The brief ceremony took place at the President’s office inside the Presidential Villa in Abuja.

After the ceremonial presentation of the sealed envelope carrying the card, President Buhari was guided through the process of activating his card.

DG/CEO NIMC, Chris Onyemenam, after presenting and overseeing the activation of the President’s e-ID card, answered a few questions from the State House press corps. He said they were particularly in the State House to demonstrate to Mr President how the National Identification Number could be used in the verification of an individual’s identity, even where the individual is not physically present. He said “that is the reason we said the National Identification Number is a security number, because with that and access to our database, you can confirm the identity of an individual”.

On harmonization of the many citizens’ databases in Nigeria, Barrister Onyemenam said “with the help of harmonization and integration that Mr President has directed, we are getting rapidly far more than we ever did in trying to unite our database”.  He said the commission was processing about 20 million data from the Bank Verification Number scheme. NIMC has also collaborated with INEC, PenCOM, The Nigeria Police Force, Federal Road Safety Commission, NCC and the Nigeria Immigration Service.
